QA Engineer
About this role
Our Mission:
At Sunrise Robotics, we are dedicated to augmenting humanity through intelligent robotics. Our mission is to elevate the world of manufacturing by introducing intelligent, flexible robots that enhance human capabilities and existing machinery, ushering in the next era of production at higher quality, with less waste, and lower cost.
Our Vision:
We see a future where every element of manufacturing, from design to assembly, is optimised with intelligent automation. Our vision is to integrate flexible robotic solutions, based on generic hardware and advanced software/AI capabilities, into manufacturing, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises, to make automation economically viable and accessible, for all sizes of manufacturers. We are not just building robots; we are creating the strategically crucial components for autonomous, intelligent agents of the future.
The Role:
At Sunrise Robotics, the QA Engineer role validates the software that runs our robotic cells and helps it move from alpha to production quickly, safely, and with clear evidence.
This is not a “click around the UI” QA role. Our product is a physical robotic cell: two robot arms, cameras, safety systems, edge compute, perception, motion, behavior trees, deployment tooling, and a customer-facing interface all working together in the real world.
Your job is to help define and enforce the internal R&D definition of done for software running on robotic cells, then make the handover to deploy teams clear and low-friction. That means defining what needs to be tested, coordinating the right engineers, making test evidence visible, and making sure a robotic cell is genuinely ready for the next stage, not just passing a few isolated checks.
Early on, you’ll learn how our system works and help run the alpha-to-production validation process. Over time, we expect you to define the coding standards, acceptance criteria, quality gates, test matrices, and process automation that let every team contribute software that meets the same bar.
What You’ll Do:
Validate the full robotic system, not just individual software components or UI flows.
Help move new software from alpha to production within days, not weeks.
Define clear test plans for features running on real robotic cells.
Define acceptance criteria for software deployed to cells in alpha, beta and other stages.
Help shape coding standards and release-readiness expectations for cell software.
Coordinate engineers across software, robotics, perception, simulation, deployment, and product.
Make sure test results, risks, blockers, and open issues are documented and communicated clearly.
Help define what quality gates mean for different parts of the system.
Help design and implement CI pipelines, automated checks, and process automation around validation, in collaboration with engineering.
Reduce handover friction between teams building software and deploy teams receiving software releases.
Improve the QA process as Sunrise scales to a larger fleet.
Work with simulations, R&D cells, and hardware-in-the-loop validation where useful.
Ensure robotic-cell testing follows our safety policies and operational rules.
Build practical quality gates that help us move faster without lowering the bar.
What This Is Not:
It is not manual UI testing.
It is not factory acceptance testing ownership.
It is not supplier or hardware quality ownership.
It is not a role for someone who only wants perfectly defined test cases handed to them.
What You’ll Need:
Strong experience in QA, test engineering, systems validation, or software quality.
Ability to think in systems: software, hardware, data, operators, edge cases, and failure modes.
Experience creating test plans, acceptance criteria, release gates, or validation processes.
Experience working with CI pipelines, automated checks, or software release processes.
Ability to work with CI/CD, and test automation tooling.
Experience validating software that interacts with hardware, robotics, physical devices, or other real-world systems.
Enough technical depth to challenge engineers and express what test coverage is needed.
Strong written communication: you can make test results, risks, and decisions obvious.
High ownership and good judgement in ambiguous environments.
Comfort working with a physical product where bugs can have real-world consequences.
Pragmatism: you know when to add process, when to remove it, and when to just get the right people in a room.
Familiarity with ROS 2, Isaac or other simulation tools, strong knowledge of Linux.
What Makes You Stand Out:
Experience with robotics, industrial automation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, or embedded systems.
Familiarity with ABB robots, PLCs, cameras, Jetson and similar systems.
Experience with simulation and release engineering.
Familiarity with safety-critical or operationally critical testing environments.
How You’ll Work:
You’ll work closely with the engineering teams building the robotic software stack, including software, robotics, perception, simulation, deployment, and product.
This is a hybrid role with a strong on-site component and you'll need to be regularly present around our robotic cells. However, there is flexibility to work remotely for periods when your responsibilities don't require a physical presence.
What Success Looks Like:
In the first few months, you understand the robotic cell, the software stack, the current QA gaps, and the alpha-to-beta validation flow.
After that, you are helping new software reach beta within days, with clearer evidence, fewer surprises, and less handover friction.
Longer term, you own and improve the standards, acceptance criteria, CI checks, and QA process so Sunrise can scale software releases across more cells without relying on heroics.
