The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

The Certified Nursing Assistant I provides direct patient care and support in Department of Adult Correction healthcare settings under the supervision of nursing or other clinical staff. The position supports the health, safety, personal care, and daily living needs of patients or incarcerated individuals through routine nursing support, observation, personal care, and assistance with established treatment or clinical plans.

Key Duties Include:
- Obtain and document routine patient information such as vital signs, weight, height, or other observations within the assigned scope of practice.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting, ambulation, repositioning, or personal hygiene.
- Prepare patients for examinations, treatments, or other healthcare services under the direction of nursing or clinical staff.
- Observe patient conditions, behaviors, or changes in functioning and report relevant information to nursing or other professional staff.
- Collect, label, or handle specimens such as blood, urine, feces, or sputum within the assigned scope of practice.
- Transport or escort patients safely within healthcare or correctional environments.
- Maintain patient care areas through activities such as changing linens, making beds, sanitation, or other infection-control-related practices.
- Support established treatment, therapeutic, recreational, or behavior-management activities as directed by clinical or professional program staff.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Temporary Role: 11 months with a 31-day break; renewal opportunities available.

Pay Rate: $20 /hour

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Documented experience obtaining or recording patient information such as vital signs, weight, height, symptoms, behaviors, or changes in condition.

  • Demonstrated experience following established clinical instructions, treatment plans, nursing procedures, infection-control practices, or patient-care protocols.

  • Proven experience communicating patient observations, changes in condition, behavioral concerns, or other care-related information to nurses, healthcare providers, or other professional staff.

Location Availability

Statewide –variation of shift assignments according to facility. Availability of specific shifts will be discussed during the interview process.
