The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

The Registered Nurse provides professional nursing care to patients in Department of Adult Correction healthcare settings in accordance with medical protocols, established nursing procedures, and the Registered Nurse scope of practice. The position independently assesses patient needs, plans and evaluates nursing care, administers medications and treatments, responds to changes in patient condition or medical emergencies, and may coordinate the work of licensed and non-licensed nursing staff during an assigned shift.

Key Duties Include:
- Conduct nursing assessments, sick call evaluations, or other clinical screenings to identify patient needs and changes in condition.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans based on patient assessments, medical diagnoses, provider orders, or treatment needs.
- Administer medications and treatments while monitoring patient response, medication effects, contraindications, or other clinical concerns.
- Carry out physician or other authorized provider orders and assist with examinations, procedures, treatments, or follow-up care.
- Respond to medical emergencies, acute changes in condition, or other urgent healthcare needs using established nursing protocols and clinical judgment.
- Monitor and address communicable disease concerns, treatment compliance, or other ongoing healthcare needs within the correctional environment.
- Maintain accurate nursing documentation related to assessments, care plans, medications, treatments, patient education, or changes in condition.
- Coordinate or oversee the work of Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, or other assigned healthcare staff through delegation, work assignments, or clinical guidance.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Temporary Role: 11 months with a 31-day break; renewal opportunities available.

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience independently conducting nursing assessments or clinical screenings and identifying changes in patient condition requiring nursing intervention or provider follow-up.

  • Documented experience developing, implementing, or evaluating nursing care plans based on patient diagnoses, clinical findings, provider orders, or treatment needs.

  • Demonstrated experience administering medications or treatments while monitoring therapeutic response, side effects, contraindications, or other medication-related concerns.

  • Proven experience responding to medical emergencies, acute changes in patient condition, or other urgent clinical situations using established nursing protocols or independent nursing judgment.

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating nursing care through delegation, work assignments, clinical guidance, or oversight of Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, or similar healthcare staff.

Location Availability

Statewide –variation of shift assignments according to facility. Availability of specific shifts will be discussed during the interview process.
