MUFG is seeking a Vice President to join the Portfolio Management Group (PMG) within the Sponsor, Growth & Middle Market (SGMM) Healthcare vertical. This role is responsible for the underwriting and portfolio management of sponsor-backed and corporate healthcare borrowers.

The Vice President will manage a designated portfolio of middle market healthcare credits, lead the underwriting and execution of new transactions, oversee ongoing portfolio monitoring, and ensure compliance with internal credit policies and regulatory requirements.

The successful candidate will combine strong credit analysis and portfolio management capabilities with leadership responsibilities, serving as a key partner to Relationship Managers, Credit Division, product groups, sponsors, borrowers, and internal control functions. The Vice President will also mentor junior team members and contribute to the continued enhancement of portfolio management processes and risk management frameworks.

Responsibilities:

Portfolio Management

  • Manage a portfolio of sponsor-backed and corporate healthcare clients, including periodic credit reviews, ongoing risk assessment, and performance monitoring.

  • Analyze borrower operating performance, liquidity, leverage, cash flow generation, and debt repayment capacity to identify potential upgrades, downgrades, emerging risks, and opportunities.

  • Determine accurate internal and regulatory risk ratings and make timely rating recommendations to management.

  • Maintain direct communication with borrowers, sponsors, Relationship Managers, and internal stakeholders regarding portfolio developments.

  • Monitor healthcare industry trends, market developments, reimbursement dynamics, regulatory changes, and competitive positioning relevant to portfolio companies.

  • Coordinate and communicate portfolio account information across Credit, Relationship Management, Product Partners, Operations, Compliance, and Senior Management.

  • Prepare portfolio reporting, management presentations, and ad hoc analyses for senior stakeholders.

  • Ensure compliance with internal policies, regulatory guidance, and portfolio management procedures.

Underwriting & Deal Execution

  • Evaluate and underwrite leveraged buyouts (LBOs), mergers and acquisitions (M&A), recapitalizations, refinancings, add-on acquisitions, growth financings, and other complex lending transactions within the healthcare sector.

  • Build and review detailed financial models, including base case, downside case, and sensitivity analyses.

  • Prepare comprehensive credit approval memoranda addressing business risk, industry dynamics, sponsor support, transaction structure, financial performance, projections, valuation, key risks, and mitigants.

  • Identify structural risks and recommend appropriate covenant protections, deal structuring enhancements, and risk mitigants consistent with bank policies.

  • Partner with Relationship Managers, product specialists, and Credit Division throughout underwriting, approval, and closing processes.

  • Participate in client, sponsor, lender, and internal credit meetings as required.

  • Review legal documentation and coordinate closing activities to ensure transactions are executed accurately and efficiently.

Transaction Administration & Portfolio Infrastructure

  • Maintain oversight of credit administration processes and ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of portfolio documentation.

  • Review and interpret legal documentation to capture key economic and structural terms including pricing, fees, maturity profiles, collateral provisions, and covenant requirements.

  • Coordinate with Operations, Middle Office, Legal, KYC, Enterprise Value, and other control functions to facilitate successful transaction closings and portfolio maintenance.

  • Ensure credit applications, reviews, and portfolio records comply with internal standards, regulatory expectations, and documentation requirements.

  • Maintain integrity of portfolio databases and internal systems used for reporting, monitoring, and risk management.

  • Support management reporting through accurate portfolio data collection, validation, and analysis.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide guidance, oversight, and mentorship to Associates and Analysts across underwriting and portfolio management activities.

  • Review credit analyses, financial models, risk ratings, and written materials prepared by junior professionals.

  • Assist in training team members on credit risk management best practices, underwriting standards, portfolio monitoring methodologies, and healthcare sector knowledge.

  • Contribute to process improvements and initiatives designed to strengthen portfolio management practices, risk governance, and analytical capabilities across the Healthcare vertical.

Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required; degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field preferred.

  • MBA and/or CFA designation considered a plus.

  • 7+ years of experience in commercial banking, leveraged finance, sponsor finance, corporate banking, private credit, credit risk management, or related financial services roles.

  • Significant experience underwriting and managing corporate credit exposure to middle market and sponsor-backed companies.

  • Healthcare industry experience strongly preferred.

  • Strong understanding of corporate finance, accounting, leveraged lending, and credit risk fundamentals.

  • Advanced financial modeling and cash flow analysis capabilities.

  • Knowledge of healthcare subsectors, reimbursement frameworks, regulatory dynamics, and industry-specific credit considerations is a plus.

  • Experience reviewing and negotiating legal credit documentation and transaction structures.

  • Strong communication, presentation, and relationship management skills.

  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Completion of a formal credit training program at a major financial institution is highly desirable.

Compensation & Benefits:

The typical base pay range for this role is between $149k - $182k depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location. This role may also be eligible for certain discretionary performance-based bonus and/or incentive compensation.
